Determining Financial Need
The financial aid system works on one basic principle: parents and students contribute to the cost of college to the extent they are able. If they are unable to contribute the entire amount, financial aid is available to meet the remaining cost. The formula to determine financial aid eligibility or need is:
| What it costs to attend | |
| — | What your family can contribute |
| = | Your financial need |
Here's an example of how this works. Let's say your family can contribute $5,000 a year, and you are looking at three colleges:
| School A | School B | School C | |
| Cost | $5,000 | $15,000 | $30,000 |
| Family contribution | $5,000 | $5,000 | $5,000 |
| Financial need | $0 | $10,000 | $25,000 |
