Education Abroad

A variety of international education program opportunities are available to UD students, who may attend one of the UD exchanges or summer programs, or study during the regular academic year on an approved program run by another university or organization.

Summer Education Abroad

The Summer Study Abroad Program through the Center for International Programs is designed to meet the academic requirements of current UD students enrolled in any discipline. The courses allow students to integrate classroom knowledge with cultural experiences.

The program is a unique study and travel experience. It usually offers a choice of seven to ten sites during the months of May, June and July, with students spending approximately four-and-a-half weeks at each program site. In the past, sites have included fascinating cities such as Berlin, Dublin, Florence, London, Madrid, Munich, Paris, Rome, St. Petersburg and Vienna.

Courses from a variety of disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, business, education and engineering are conducted by University of Dayton professors. Courses utilize on-site resources to enhance the learning experience and generally include a one-credit, on-site orientation class. Students who choose to study at two sites could earn up to a full semester of credits. Full two-site participation costs are about the same as one semester on the UD campus.

Summer Education Abroad — Languages

For students who wish to develop their spoken and written foreign language skills, the University offers intensive study programs in Canada, Chile, Germany and Spain through the Department of Languages. Current UD students have the opportunity to improve their foreign language skills while integrating their personal experiences and discoveries with material discussed in class lectures.

University of Dayton professors design the courses to incorporate contemporary use of the language and explore the culture, government and history of the city and nation in which they are teaching. This study abroad opportunity is available to students during the months of May, June and July.

To participate, students must be 18 years old and have some background in the language appropriate for the country they will be visiting.

Summer and Academic Year Education Abroad — Business

Business majors can take advantage of several study abroad programs designed specially for their needs. Augsburg, Germany, is the site for the School of Business Administration's longest-running summer study abroad program. The city of Augsburg is Dayton's sister city and offers students the opportunity to live and study in a historic German city, close to several major cities but small enough to allow students to become acquainted with German culture. Classes are taught by University of Dayton professors and Augsburg faculty from a variety of disciplines within the School of Business Administration. In addition to regular business classes, students may take a German culture class and German language classes. Other summer study abroad sites for business majors typically include Ireland, Italy and Spain.

The School of Business Administration also sponsors several exchange programs where students spend a semester or an entire academic year at one of the following universities: Helsinki School of Economics and Business (Mikkeli, Finland), École Supérieure de Management de l'Enterprise (Lille and Nice, France) and Universidad de Deusto (San Sebastián, Spain). Tuition costs for these exchange programs are the same as regular UD tuition. In addition to tuition, students are responsible for their room and board in the host country, international travel and personal expenses. Most financial aid (including institutional scholarships and grants) applies to exchange programs.

Semester/Academic Year Education Abroad

The University of Dayton offers students the opportunity to incorporate an international dimension into their academic program during the regular school year. UD students may choose from UD's existing exchange and affiliate programs, or elect to participate in programs sponsored by other institutions. A study abroad adviser helps students explore program opportunities, understand institutional requirements and navigate the application process.

UD participates in exchange agreements with several overseas institutions. Not only can UD students study at these institutions, but students from these schools have an opportunity to come to Dayton, Ohio, to study in UD classrooms. Tuition costs are the same as regular UD tuition. In addition to tuition, students are responsible for their room and board in the host country, international travel and personal expenses. Most financial aid (including institutional scholarships and grants) applies to exchange programs. The following exchange programs are administered by the Center for International Programs.

France

Depending on their degree of language ability, students may choose from two exchange programs with universities in France. An agreement with the École Supérieure des Sciences Commerciales d'Angers offers a unique spring semester program in European Affairs designed to give students a broad understanding of the business environment in the European Union. Course work is in English, yet students study alongside French business students preparing for a semester in the United States.

The exchange program with the Institut Catholique provides students an opportunity to study French language and culture classes as part of the Cours de Français Langue Étrangère, a special program designed for students around the world who are studying French as a foreign language. The Institut is located at the heart of historical Paris, close to the Latin Quarter and the district of Montparnesse, places of intellectual and artistic tradition.

Germany

An agreement with the Universität Augsburg allows students with a high degree of German proficiency to spend a semester in Augsburg, about one hour from Munich. Students select from a wide variety of offerings in business, social sciences and humanities.

Morocco

Students interested in spending a semester at the crossroads of Eastern, European and African cultures are welcome to attend Al Akhawayn University at Ifrane for one or two semesters. A private university with classes taught in English, Al Akhawayn offers course work in business, engineering, international studies and Arabic, as well as traditional offerings in the social sciences and humanities.

UD students can study abroad in a variety of countries through affiliation agreements between UD and study abroad organizations or overseas universities. Tuition for affiliate programs varies by country. In addition to tuition, students are responsible for room and board in the host country, international travel and personal expenses. Aid for affiliated programs is limited to federal loans and grants.

Australia and New Zealand

Many UD students have enjoyed the beauty and adventure of Australia through the AustraLearn program. Offering a broad range of academic disciplines in a number of universities throughout the country, AustraLearn strives to provide study abroad students with a deep understanding and appreciation of the land down under.

England

An affiliation with American Intercontinental University gives students a special opportunity in London to gain a full semester of academic credit, plus a three-month internship in a wide variety of fields. Business and communication students in particular will benefit from AIU's programs.

Italy

Students interested in a semester or academic year in Italy may elect the UD/JCU Rome program. Offered through an affiliation with John Cabot University, students enjoy the personal attention of a small liberal arts college located in the heart of historic Rome. With particular emphasis in art history, business administration, English literature, international affairs and political science, the UD/JCU program offers an excellent opportunity to explore Italian culture while providing academic course work in English. Students who wish to immerse themselves in Italian language and culture may choose to attend John Cabot University and live as part of the Villa Nazareth Christian community. Inquire at UD's Center for International Programs for details.

Other Affiliations
UD also has affiliation agreements with AIFS (American Institute for Foreign Study) and API (Academic Programs International). Through these organizations, UD students can study in Argentina, Australia, Austria, China, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Service Opportunities Abroad

The Center for Social Concern offers opportunities for students to combine service-learning with their education abroad experience. The summer cultural immersion programs introduce students to the country's way of life through job placements, interaction with host families and travel through the country. Past destinations have included Bangalore, Cameroon and Guatemala. The Center for Social Concern also coordinates week-long service programs during the University's spring break.

Through ETHOS (Engineers in Technical Humanitarian Opportunities of Service-learning), engineering students utilize their engineering skills in a technical service-learning internship during the summer. A course during the preceding spring term offers an introduction to appropriate technology and the culture, and language preparation. Opportunities exist primarily in Latin America.

Other Opportunities

The range of study abroad programs available to UD students is considerable. In addition to University of Dayton offerings, students may choose from hundreds of programs offered by other institutions, both foreign and domestic. Many programs focus on specific academic disciplines, while others offer a broad range of opportunities. A growing number of programs combine independent study and internship work with traditional classes, thus offering students a truly customized overseas program. Classes taken through other programs may be used toward UD degree requirements provided transfer credit for each course is approved by the student's academic dean before the student's departure. Contact the Center for International Programs for details.

Additional Funding Opportunities

University Honors and Berry Scholars students may apply for the Cordell W. Hull International Fellows Fund, which provides funding to engage in special projects, research and programs, enabling students to learn, lead and serve abroad. Individual grants range from $500 to $7,500 but may not be used for University of Dayton tuition. Interested students may contact the University Honors Programs office for more information. Scholarships are also available for summer study abroad programs through the Center for International Programs and the Department of Languages. Please contact the Center for International Programs for further information.

Support Services

The Center for International Programs guides students from the moment they seek help in pursuing an educational experience abroad. Whether the student wishes to attend a program through the University of Dayton or through another institution, our study abroad programs director assists with the application process and prepares each student through a predeparture orientation. The study abroad office also offers a re-entry program to students returning to the United States. Additionally, a University-wide travel registry allows the University to remain in close contact with each student should they need assistance while abroad.
