Career-Related Programs

The goal of any career-related program is to provide practical work experience associated with a student's course of study and/or life experience through service-learning/volunteering opportunities. All students pursuing a four-year degree program should consider one or more of these programs. Visit the Career Services Web Site >>

Internships
Internships are part-time, paid or nonpaid positions during the school year, or full-time, paid or nonpaid positions during the summer months. An internship may be part of an educational program, carefully monitored and evaluated for credit by an academic program or part of a learning plan the student develops. Each academic program sets its own conditions and requirements for internship credit. Visit the Internships Web Site >>

Internship Reference Guide
This guide is an initiative undertaken in collaboration with the academic departments and external partners. The Guide serves as a "clearinghouse" of information concerning all internship programs throughout the University. The Guide will be an invaluable resource for students, advisors, faculty, staff, our business partners and even parents.

Cooperative Education
Students alternate semesters of full-time study with full-time work experience in positions related to their major. Generally, students remain with the same employer during alternating terms. Most students are eligible to interview for their first work term during their third semester of full-time study. Business, arts and sciences co-op programs are housed in Career Services. The engineering co-op program is housed in the School of Engineering. Visit the Cooperative Education Web Site >>

Student Contract Program Positions
These are part-time, paid positions during the school year and full-time, paid positions during the summer months. Several Dayton-area employers choose to hire student employees through the contract program. Students are placed on the University payroll while working at the employer's location.

Externships and/or Job Shadowing
Usually ranging from one to five days, this opportunity allows students to shadow a mentor in the workplace and gain experience related to the student's field of interest. Externships are primarily nonpaid and can take place during breaks in the academic year.

Community/Service-Learning
These programs emphasize tasks that address community issues, as well as larger social issues. Community/service-learning opportunities are carefully monitored service experiences, generally nonpaid, in which a student has intentional learning goals and reflects on what is learned throughout the experience.

Volunteer Opportunities
These nonpaid opportunities allow students to gain practical and/or career-related experience while putting their talents to use in a needed area.

International Placement or Study/Work Abroad Opportunities
Students may combine working with a study abroad assignment or short-term placement in international businesses. The student's academic program carefully monitors these placements. Visit the Center for International Programs Web Site >>

Hire-A-Flyer Network
